Following conversations with her grandma, the series looks at family history and the complexities of storytelling. Thinking about what happens to stories when they are passed down orally, the process of Zoya’s works begins with an ink drawing inspired by her grandmother’s life, but slowly transforms to become unclear or covered up as she adds pastel. The process reflects the many ways in which histories can change from misinterpretation (whether intentionally or unintentionally). Many questions arise: Who owns the stories when recounting family history? Who is allowed to share them? What is real? What is true? Does it matter?

Tras una serie de conversaciones con su abuela, Zoya Godoroja-Prieckaerts analiza su historia familiar y las complejidades de la narración. La artista se cuestiona qué sucede cuando transmitimos historias de forma oral. El proceso de la obra comienza con un dibujo a tinta inspirado por las historias de la vida de su abuela, y se va transformando lentamente agregando tizas que lo encubren todo y no permiten ver el retrato con claridad. El proceso refleja la forma en la cual las historias pueden cambiar de interpretación dependiendo de quién te las cuenta y cómo, ya sea intencionalmente o no. Surgen varias preguntas: ¿Quién es el dueño de las historias familiares? ¿Quién tiene permiso a compartirlas? ¿Qué es real? ¿Qué es verdad? ¿Importa?
